According to an article in Nature Cell Biology (15; 1507-1515, 2013), Izpizua’s team has, for the first time, created pieces of functioning renal tissue (primordial cells). This finding represents a new opportunity to build upon our knowledge of the human embryo, determine the causes of certain kidney diseases and further the development of new drugs in their treatment. In this case, iPS cells were obtained from the adult cells of two patients with renal polycystic kidney disease.
