New technique: It involves iPS cells from HIV-resistant individuals for the treatment of people infected
Some people have a mutation in their genome (CCR5A32) that gives them certain resistance to HIV infection. Taking advantage of this situation, a step has now been taken that could be useful for the treatment of HIV-positive individuals. It involves deriving iPS cells from these individuals and producing monocytes/macrophages from them. The authors demonstrated their resistance to HIV infection and suggested that this strategy could open a doorway for the treatment of individuals infected with this virus (PNAS 111; 9591-9596,2014).
