Data collected between 2005 and 2007 show that 19% of North American university students aged between 18 and 25 years have suffered sexual assault or attempted sexual assault. Around 75% to 80% knew their attacker. Only 20% of assaults were reported to police, compared to 32% for non-university students. This high percentage of sexual assaults has prompted university authorities to establish preventive policies and more effective judicial bodies (JAMA 314; 347-348, 2015).
