A large study analyzing the first 2241 medically assisted deaths – euthanasia – (read our report about this new term (HERE) in Ontario published in January 2020 in Canadian Medical Association Journal on Canada’s federal government should continue to proceed with caution on MAID policy. The authors, Downar and colleagues’ findings should allay concerns that people living in Ontario are choosing MAID (euthanasia or assisted suicide) because they have little social support or have poor access to health care. Based on this large study, the Canadian government conducted a survey to try to determine the criteria to be followed with respect to “Medical assistance in dying” – MAID (read HERE). The consultation was instigated by the Superior Court of Quebec. The consultation included 300,000 people, and the results will be published once they are analyzed.
