In the US and the UK, abortion service provision during the pandemic has been restricted to surgical abortion. With respect to chemical abortion, the FDA requires Mifepristone, an abortion drug, to be given out in-person with a prescription from a certified medical specialist, according to a report in Christian Headline.  A group of House Democrats and pro-choice activists recently urged the Biden administration to legalize sending abortion pills via mail, which would reverse the two-decade-old rule that requires pills for medical abortions to be acquired in person with a medical prescription. Chemical abortion during pandemic era promoted for health care systems

Earlier this month (18 February), British newspaper The Guardian published an article about temporary legislation in the UK, allowing receipt of the pill by post with medical attention by a National Health Service clinician over the phone or through Internet consultation. It says that, “In March, due to the coronavirus pandemic, temporary legislation was introduced that allowed patients within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy to take pills for early medical abortion in their own homes.”

Last February 18 the English journal The Guardian published an article about the delivery of the pill with medical attention by NHS which is now a normal practice in this country. It says, “In March, due to the coronavirus pandemic, temporary legislation was introduced that allowed patients within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy to take pills for early medical abortion in their own homes.”

In-home chemical abortion

Statistics by the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) show that between April and June 2020, 43% of medical abortions were administered at home. DHSC spokesperson said: “The current temporary measures allow eligible women to use both pills for early medical abortion – which goes up to 10 weeks of gestation – at home, and at the end of last year we launched a three-month consultation on whether to make this permanent.” (The Guardian, February 18, 2020)

In our opinion, these proposals in both countries have ethical objectives problems since there is medical evidence of adverse problems that may be associated with the use of mifepristone and other abortive pills, such as hemorrhages that can become severe and other side effects. But we are also of the opinion that mifepristone, a drug originally used to treat stomach problems and its medical insecurity, has been used mainly in developing countries, especially in Brazil and Cuba, we believe that being able to be acquired by mail without further requirements has increased medical risk.

Bioethical statement of chemical abortion in coronavirus era or not

In addition to the medical problems that this practice may have, chemical abortion is ethically and morally unacceptable. (read more HERE).
