The Institute of Neuroscience at the University of Barcelona (Spain) is one of several scientific institutes collaborating with Ashton University (Birmingham,  UK) that are aiming to develop microchips made of neuronal circuits using human induced pluripotent stem cells.

Based on a previous study led by researchers at Aston University,  the project has been awarded €3.5m (£3.06m) “to show how neurons – the brain’s information processors – can be harnessed to supercharge computers’ ability to learn [our emphasis] while dramatically cutting energy use”. The initiative hopes to produce microchips made of neuronal circuits using human induced pluripotent stem cells.

Researchers involved in the project say that, “Current electronic approaches to machine learning have limits, requiring ever-growing computing power and high energy demands. The recent trend towards ‘neuromorphic computing’, which aims to mimic human neural activity electronically, is hampered by the inherent limitations of conventional electronics.”(read more HERE).

The research team is beginning a three-year study to demonstrate how human brain stem cells grown on a microchip can be programmed to solve problems from data, laying the foundations for a “paradigm shift” in machine learning technology. From a bioethical point of view, the project using neural circuits with human-induced pluripotent cells raises no ethical concerns. If this project is successful, it would create an unusual AI paradigm according to which biology would be necessary to achieve an AI project.
