A non-binding resolution on abortion as a fundamental right was adopted with 324 votes in favor, 155 against and 38 abstentions.
The Chamber affirms that “everyone has the right to a safe and legal abortion”, and shows its support and solidarity with the women of the United States and those who collaborate in the defense and provision of safe and legal assistance after the repeal of Roe Vs. Wade.
In addition, it shows concern about whether anti-abortion groups receive funds for their financing.
The resolution calls for EU countries to ensure access to safe, legal and free abortion. And it calls on the member countries to guarantee family planning, contraceptive methods and prenatal and maternal health care.
It should be remembered that last January Emmanuel Macron already requested the inclusión of abortion as a fundamental right and that in June 2021 the European Parliament declared abortion a “human right” in the Matić Report.
In any case, it is unlikely that they will finally manage to include abortion as a “fundamental right”, since the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union can only be modified unanimously.
Bioethical assessment
As we have previously published, the first article of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union proclaims the right to life, which enters into a head-on collision with this supposed “right to abortion” that necessarily implies violating the right to life of the unborn. This is the first serious contradiction of the current position of the majority of the European Parliament. The second contradiction, which invalidates their arguments, is the non-existence of safe abortion.
Promoting abortion is multiplying the risk of women who undergo it. Abortion constitutes a physical aggression against the physiological situation of the pregnant woman, in which violent changes are produced destined to end the life of her child. It will also have consequences on her own health, both immediately and associated complications, in the form of an increased risk of suffering from mental disorders in the future, as has been sufficiently documented.
Furthermore, repeated exposure to abortion, to which the recognition of abortion as a fundamental right leads, alarmingly multiplies the risk of suffering from these disorders, which can compromise the lives of those involved.
Killing is never a right, and the aggression that an abortion entails cannot be associated with “reproductive health” either. Abortion kills and makes sick. It is neither a right nor is it healthy.
