The World Federation of Catholic Medical Associations (FIAMC) has opposed the appointment of the economist Mariana Mazzucato as a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life.
The prestigious international association that was born in 1966 and is based in the Vatican, brings together Catholic medical associations from around the world, and has made its concern public, recalling that Mazzucato “has expressed her views favorable to procured abortion openly in the (social) media”.
Association spokesmen also point out that, according to the 2016 statutes of the Pontifical Academy for Life, members are selected from among those who have shown “faithful service in the defense and promotion of the right to life of every human person” and these members must ” promote and defend the principles regarding the value of life and dignity of the human person, interpreted in a way that conforms to the Magisterium of the Church”.
The Pontifical Academy for Life has sent a note to the media where Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia justifies that the members come “from different contexts enter the Pontifical Academy for Life, for a constant and fruitful interdisciplinary, intercultural and interreligious dialogue. This is why among the academics there are also non-Catholic people: two rabbis, a Shinto academician, Muslims, an Anglican theologian. The Pontifical Academy for Life is a study and research body. So the debate and dialogue take place between people of different backgrounds”.
