Initiating anti retroviral treatments as soon as an individual has been identified as HIV-positive is better than doing so at a later stage. In this respect, the risk of developing AIDS was reduced by 53% in a group of people who commenced anti-retroviral treatment early on.

Moreover, this benefit is not just limited to the individual treated, but it also reduces the risk that the carrier can infect another healthy individual which whom they have sex (BMJ, 350: h2963, 2015).
