Building on two decades of research, investigators at UT Southwestern medical school have determined that “cellular housekeeping” (all cells and code for proteins that are essential for basic cell growth and metabolism)  can extend the lifespan and improve the health of mammals. In an article published in Nature (see HERE), whose lead author is a Spaniard, Severo Fernández, the authors report that they have managed to extend cell life by 10% using a genetic engineering technique. The authors say, “Together, our data demonstrate that disruption of the beclin 1–BCL2 complex is an effective mechanism to increase autophagy (more autophagy may prolong life), prevent premature ageing, improve healthspan and promote longevity in mammals”. They also suggest that this technique could result in a life expectancy increase in humans in near future.
